markphotoMark Harrison, our Social Media Specialist talks about what’s going on with facebook and why you need to become a pro at boosting posts for your business on facebook.

Word on the street is that Facebook has lowered its organic engagement rights to 2.7%. Organic engagement rates are the number of people who see your posts without you having to pay for them. Prior to Facebook’s floating on the stock market, engagement rates were allowed to be very high. This was to encourage businesses to set up Facebook pages. Now that Facebook is a listed company, they require page owners to pay the piper. This is understandable since the page doesn’t actually belong to you, nor do the fans on the page. They’re all Facebook’s.

So what does this mean for you as a business owner? Initially, to get fans in the first place you now have to pay for them. This means you need to spend a few dollars to purchase fans who fit your customer demographic. This doesn’t have to be very expensive. It can be in the order of a couple of dollars per day. When it comes to having your fans to see your posts you will need to boost your posts. What this means is that you will need to select a budget for each post and pay Facebook to show that post to more than 2.7% of your fans. You can select to show the post only to fans, or to fans and their friends, which is better. This also is inexpensive and you choose the budget.

Another recent rule change is that you may no longer “fan gate” your Facebook apps. For example, if you required people to like your page prior to entering a competition via an app, you may no longer do this. Whilst this is annoying, it is not the end of the world. You may still require fans into details such as their email address to enter the competition. Ultimately, a live email address is what you are really after anyway.
